MEC Fanta Praises Social Workers, Police After Ngqamakhwe Children Alcohol Incident

Komani, Eastern Cape – Eastern Cape Social Development MEC Bukiwe Fanta has commended social workers and police for their swift response following an incident in Ngqamakhwe where children were allegedly allowed to consume alcohol.

The matter came to light after a video surfaced showing minors drinking alcohol in the presence of adults, raising serious child safety concerns.

Police Investigations Underway

Ngqamakhwe SAPS opened a criminal case after the video went viral. On Tuesday, 30 December, investigators traced the incident to a household in the Khothane Administrative Area, Santini Location, Ngqamakhwe.

A case docket has been registered for contravention of the National Liquor Act (Act 59 of 2003), specifically for supplying liquor to minors—a serious offence under South African law. No arrests have been made at this stage. Once the investigation concludes, the case will be submitted to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions for further action.

MEC Fanta praised the professionalism and speed of both social workers and law enforcement officials. “The swift action taken by our social workers and police is commendable. It demonstrates our shared commitment to ensuring the safety and well-being of our children,” she said.

The Eastern Cape Department of Social Development continues to prioritise child welfare and calls on the community to report any incidents that may endanger minors.
