Arson case opened after fire at Dr AB Xuma offices
The Dr AB Xuma Local Municipality has confirmed that a fire broke out at a section of its municipal offices during the early hours of Thursday.
The fire broke out after a total shutdown at Engcobo where residents were calling for the removal of the municipal manager.
According to a statement issued by the Municipality’s Communications Unit, the incident has been reported to the South African Police Service and a case of *arson* has been opened.
The Municipality said the matter is now under investigation and it will not release further details until it is appropriate to do so, in order to allow law enforcement to do their work.
“The Municipality is working closely with law enforcement agencies to ensure that the matter is thoroughly investigated,” the statement read.
As part of immediate security measures, Public Order Police have been deployed to municipal premises to enhance visibility and maintain public safety. The Municipality has also engaged with the office of the Eastern Cape MEC for Community Safety.
Despite the incident, the Municipality assured the public that municipal services will continue with minimal disruption. Contingency plans have been activated to ensure the institution continues to function.
