Inxuba Yethemba Municipality writes off R22 million indigent debt

Inxuba Yethemba Municipality has approved the write-off of more than R22 million in historical debt owed by qualifying indigent households.

The R22,048,684.10 debt relief covers arrears accumulated before residents were approved as indigent under the municipality’s Indigent Management Policy.

Executive Mayor Noncedo Zonke welcomed the decision, saying it would provide relief to struggling families across the municipality.

“This decision brings much-needed relief to many struggling families across the municipality and reflects Council’s commitment to supporting the most vulnerable members of our communities,” Zonke said.

“For many households, this means one less financial burden and a fresh opportunity to move forward with dignity.”

Ward 1 received the highest write-off at R3.88 million, followed by Ward 2 with R3.73 million and Ward 4 with R3.28 million. Ward 5 received the lowest amount at R413,670.55.

The municipality encouraged households that may qualify for indigent support to register so they can benefit from the available assistance.
