Mbhashe Registers Residents for Free Electricity Support

XHORA (Elliotdale), EASTERN CAPE – Residents of Xhora (Elliotdale) gathered in large numbers at the Thafalehashi Art Centre as Mbhashe Local Municipality rolled out a registration programme aimed at assisting indigent households with access to free basic electricity.

The municipality confirmed that the current registration drive is focused on identifying qualifying beneficiaries who may receive free electricity for three consecutive years, subject to meeting the required criteria.

Community members reportedly filled the venue as officials processed applications and provided information about the qualifying conditions. The initiative forms part of the municipality’s indigent support programme, which is designed to assist vulnerable households who are unable to afford basic municipal services.

Focus on Free Basic Electricity

According to information shared during the session, residents who qualify will be registered to receive free electricity for a period of up to three years. The municipality indicated that beneficiaries must meet the necessary requirements before approval is granted.

Speaking during the programme, Chief Whip Councillor Nombongo Apleni outlined the purpose and importance of the initiative.

She stated that the programme aims to restore dignity to disadvantaged community members and that even small forms of support can make a meaningful difference in residents’ lives.

The municipality emphasised that the registration process is part of broader efforts to improve service delivery and ensure that indigent households are formally recorded in the municipal system.

Programme Continues in Ward 18

Officials confirmed that the registration campaign will continue on Wednesday in Ward 18, covering areas within the Mndwaka and Khotyana administrative sections.

Residents in those areas have been encouraged to attend and ensure that they bring the necessary documentation required for registration.

The municipality has not yet provided figures on how many residents registered during the Xhora session, but the turnout suggests significant interest in the programme.

Supporting Vulnerable Households

Indigent support programmes are commonly implemented by municipalities across South Africa to assist households that fall below a certain income threshold. Benefits may include free basic electricity, water or refuse removal, depending on local policies and budget allocations.

Mbhashe Local Municipality’s current focus on electricity support comes at a time when many rural households continue to face economic pressure and rising living costs.
