Mother of Two Dies After Multiple Surgeries, Family Alleges Negligence at Frontier Hospital

Komani, Eastern Cape — The Frans family is mourning the tragic loss of 26-year-old Babalwa Frans, a mother of two young boys, after a series of post-operative complications following childbirth at Frontier Hospital in Komani. The family alleges that medical negligence played a role in her death.

Birth and Early Complications

Babalwa Frans gave birth to her second son via Caesarean section on 29 September 2025. After a brief hospital stay, she returned home with her newborn. Within days, she experienced abnormal bleeding from her operation site, prompting a visit to a local clinic. Staff there advised her to return immediately to Frontier Hospital, noting that post-operative bleeding is not normal.

Surgical Error Discovered

Upon her return, doctors performed a second operation after discovering that surgical materials had been inadvertently left inside her abdomen during the first procedure. She recovered and was discharged, but soon developed severe abdominal swelling and pain, which prevented her from breastfeeding or caring for her baby.

Referral and Third Surgery

Due to ongoing complications, Babalwa was referred back to hospital care in East London, where she underwent a third operation. Surgeons identified a serious infection, reportedly stemming from improper post-surgical care. During her hospitalisation, she was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) twice due to complications affecting her heart.

Despite initial updates suggesting she was stabilising, the family later received the devastating news that Babalwa had passed away, leaving behind her five-year-old and one-month-old sons.

Family Reaction

Her family is grieving deeply. According to relatives, her older son asked, “Abanye bayabuya, kutheni owam engazobuya? Niyathanda uxoka nina”, expressing his confusion and heartbreak over losing his mother.

Her relatives allege that inexperienced medical staff were allowed to perform surgeries on her and other women, and they are calling for accountability. Lizwa Frans, a family member, said: “As her family, we will never heal. Frontier’s negligence took her from us. We hope that sharing Babalwa’s story raises awareness about patient safety.”
