Security Guards Claim Months of Unpaid Salaries, Strike Continues

Chris Hani District security guards allege unpaid salaries

Security guards contracted to the Chris Hani District Municipality through Siyazu Security say they have stopped reporting for duty, claiming they have not received salaries for several months.

Workers told Komani News that they have not been paid since August and have not received payslips during this period. They began a strike after attempts to resolve the matter directly with the company were unsuccessful.

Workers Claim Financial Strain

The guards said the lack of payment has left them struggling to cover basic living expenses, including transport, rent, and food. Some workers also claim that insurance and loan payments have lapsed due to the delayed salaries.

“Since August, we have not received our full salaries and have no payslips,” one worker told Komani News. “We went on strike because we could no longer afford to work without pay.”

Union and Municipal Engagement

The workers said they contacted the South African Transport and Allied Workers Union (SATAWU) for assistance. They also reported the issue to the Chris Hani District Municipality, which confirmed ongoing engagements with the company.

According to the guards, police were also involved when they attempted to resolve the matter at the company’s offices.

Municipality Confirms Awareness

Chris Hani District Municipality spokesperson Thobeka Mqamelo said the municipality had previously contracted Siyazu Security for certain services and acknowledged receiving reports of delayed payments. She added that discussions with the company management are ongoing.
