Dry Taps: Electrical Fault Trips Komani Water Supply

KOMANI — Residents of Komani are being asked to hold back on the H2O today as the Chris Hani District Municipality (CHDM) battles to stabilise the local water supply following a major disruption at the water treatment works.

While the pumps are technically back online, the situation remains precarious.

The Good News and the Bad News

According to a public notice released by Municipal Manager Gcobani Mashiyi this morning, the root cause of the dry taps was a severe electrical fault at the Komani water treatment works.

The technical teams have successfully repaired the electrical issue, and pumping has officially resumed. However, residents shouldn’t expect full pressure just yet. Because the pumps were offline, the reservoirs have dropped to critically low levels.

Who is Affected?

As the system tries to build up pressure again, gravity is not on everyone’s side. The Municipality has warned that residents in high-lying areas will bear the brunt of the shortage.

• What to expect: If you live in elevated suburbs, expect either very low water pressure or complete supply interruptions while the reservoirs fill up.

A Call to Save Water

The Municipality is appealing to all residents to exercise extreme caution with water usage to allow the reservoirs to recover faster.

“Residents are advised to use water sparingly during this period,” said Municipal Manager Gcobani Mashiyi.
