Life Sentence for 21-Year-Old Who Raped Woman in New Vale, Mlungisi

The Makhanda High Court has sentenced Simanye Stamp (21) to life imprisonment for the rape of a woman in New Vale, Mlungisi—a crime committed in October 2024 that left the local community deeply shaken. The ruling was delivered on 19 November 2025 after more than a year of court proceedings.

Lured Under False Pretences

According to case evidence, the incident unfolded on 26 October 2024. Stamp approached a woman he knew and told her he needed to fetch his belongings from a homestead in New Vale. Trusting him, she agreed to go along.

When they arrived, Stamp overpowered her, dragging her inside the house. There, she encountered another man armed with a weapon. The two men took turns raping her.

Family Members Raced to Find Her

When the victim failed to return home, her twin sister and a neighbour became worried. Their search led them to the homestead, where they managed to reach her and remove her from the dangerous situation.

A case of rape was immediately opened at the Mlungisi SAPS.

Court Proceedings Conclude With Life Sentence

Stamp was arrested soon after. Over the following year, he made several court appearances as investigators pieced together evidence, victim statements, and the circumstances of the assault.

The presiding judge ultimately found him guilty of rape and handed down a life sentence, reflecting the severity of the crime and its impact on the survivor.

Police Leadership Welcomes the Ruling

District Commissioner Major General Rudolph Adolph expressed support for the outcome, saying the sentence comes at a crucial moment for South Africa.

He stated that, as the country battles gender-based violence and femicide, strong court rulings underline that the justice system takes these crimes extremely seriously and remains committed to protecting vulnerable individuals.

A Community Still Confronting GBVF

The ruling has been received as a firm stand against gender-based violence in Mlungisi, one of many communities in the Eastern Cape grappling with rising reports of abuse, rape, and violence against women.

The victim’s rescue—made possible by relatives who refused to wait passively—has also highlighted the importance of community vigilance, especially in cases where victims may be isolated or unable to seek help.
