Enoch Mgijima’s Ward 10 Reports Big Service Delivery Gains

Ward 10 Sees Major Infrastructure Upgrades in 2024/25 Financial Year

The Enoch Mgijima Local Municipality has released its annual report for Ward 10, highlighting extensive infrastructure maintenance and service delivery progress for the 2024/2025 financial year. The report, presented this month, details significant improvements to electricity infrastructure, road maintenance, and streetlight functionality across several key areas in Komani.

Power Infrastructure: Major Cable Replacements and Upgrades

According to the report, Ward 10 saw widespread electrical upgrades throughout the year, focusing on replacing outdated PILC cables with modern 70mm XLPE cables across multiple routes, including Livingstone, Frost, Berry, and Van Riebeek Streets.

Major substations such as Ebden, Bachelor, Balmoral, and Alexander also underwent crucial maintenance and protection system installations to improve reliability and safety. The municipality replaced over 2.8 km of cabling, strengthening power delivery to both residential and business areas.

In addition, the Enoch Mgijima Municipality confirmed that funding from the Office of the Premier (OTP) has been approved for the refurbishment of the Ebden Substation, a critical part of the region’s power network. This project is currently at the procurement stage.

Streetlight Restoration Boosts Safety

Streetlight maintenance was carried out on more than 20 streets, improving lighting coverage in Komani’s Top Town, Balmoral, and Madeira Park areas.
Among the streets attended to were Kingsway Avenue, Frost Street, Amatola Road, Berry Street, Milner Street, Hangklip Road, and Reservoir Road — all receiving new or repaired fittings to enhance public safety and visibility.

Municipal workers also attended to Buxton, Rooibok, and Bushpig Streets, completing ongoing maintenance that had been delayed by equipment shortages in previous months.

Road Maintenance: Over 1,000 Bags of Asphalt Used

The report shows that road maintenance in Ward 10 accelerated throughout the year, with both Sabhunga and cold-mix asphalt used to repair major streets.
During peak months such as January and February 2025, over 1,200 bags of asphalt were used to repair potholes and damaged road sections along key routes like Kingsway Avenue, Livingstone Road, Haig Avenue, Berry Street, and Beswick Street.

While some months, including March and April 2025, saw limited roadwork due to resource constraints, the municipality resumed maintenance by May and June — completing additional repairs along Wainwright, Haig, and Langberg Streets.

Drainage and Catchpit Cleaning

The annual report also notes ongoing efforts to improve drainage infrastructure, with 11 catchpits cleaned during the 2024/25 financial year.
Areas such as Blesbok Street, Hillside Avenue, Queens Drive Avenue, and Waterbok Street benefited from the cleaning programme aimed at reducing flooding and stormwater blockages during heavy rains.

Rural Access Roads Graded

Beyond Komani’s central streets, blading work was carried out in the Game Reserve area to improve accessibility. Over 1.6 kilometres of gravel roads were graded between July 2024 and May 2025, improving travel conditions for rural residents and visitors.

Long-Term Outlook

Looking ahead, the municipality’s medium- to long-term plans include continued refurbishment of secondary substations, completion of the Ebden Substation project, and full maintenance of mini substations across Ward 10. Officials confirmed that these upgrades form part of a broader plan to stabilise Komani’s aging infrastructure and improve reliability of service delivery.

Local Impact

Ward 10 encompasses several of Komani’s busiest residential and business areas, meaning the upgrades will have a direct impact on safety, service reliability, and community satisfaction.
While infrastructure challenges persist in other wards, this report shows measurable progress in one of the municipality’s most critical zones.
