Eastern Cape Transport Symposium to Focus on Rail Revival
The Eastern Cape Department of Transport (ECDOT) is set to host its Second Annual Transport Research Symposium, bringing together experts from government, academia and industry to explore solutions for revitalising the province’s rail network.
The three-day symposium will take place from 9 to 11 March 2026 at the Nelson Mandela University Indoor Sports Centre in Gqeberha, starting at 08:00 each day.
According to the department, the event aims to ensure that transport planning in the Eastern Cape is guided by credible research, innovative thinking and collaboration across sectors.
Focus on rebuilding the rail network
A central theme of this year’s symposium will be the rebuilding and modernisation of the province’s rail system.
Officials say revitalising rail infrastructure could play a significant role in boosting economic growth, improving mobility and supporting sustainable development across the province.
Rail transport has historically been a key part of the Eastern Cape’s transport network, linking towns, industries and ports. However, in recent years many routes have deteriorated or become underutilised due to infrastructure challenges and shifting transport patterns.
Through the symposium discussions, the department hopes to identify practical strategies and long-term solutions to restore rail as a reliable and efficient mode of transport.
Experts from multiple sectors to participate
The symposium will bring together a range of stakeholders, including:
-
Researchers and academics
-
Transport planners and engineers
-
Industry representatives
-
Government officials
By bringing these groups together, ECDOT aims to create a platform for knowledge sharing, policy discussion and collaborative problem-solving.
Officials say the engagement is expected to generate actionable recommendations that could influence future transport policy, guide infrastructure investment and support the long-term development of the rail sector in the province.
Research-driven planning
The event forms part of the department’s broader strategy to strengthen research-informed planning and innovation within the transport sector.
According to the department, ensuring that government planning is supported by credible research will help build more efficient, safe and sustainable transport systems across the Eastern Cape.
The outcomes of the symposium are expected to contribute to future transport planning initiatives and policy development within the province.
