A 29-year-old man from Alice has been sentenced to two life terms of direct imprisonment for the murder and rape of a 69-year-old woman, bringing an end to a case that dates back more than five years.
The sentence was handed down by the Bhisho High Court on Wednesday, 8 April 2026. In addition to the life sentences, the accused was also declared unfit to possess a firearm.
Crime discovered at victim’s home
According to police information, the victim’s family raised the alarm on the morning of 30 December 2021 after discovering her inside her home in Jojozi location, Alice.
Police launched an investigation on the same day, which led to the arrest of the suspect shortly afterwards.
He was later released on bail, but the case experienced delays after he failed to appear in court on multiple occasions.
Arrest warrant and re-arrest
On 23 May 2025, the court issued a warrant of arrest following his repeated absences.
He was eventually re-arrested in September 2025 and remained in custody until sentencing.
Forensic evidence key to conviction
Authorities confirmed that forensic evidence played a crucial role in securing the conviction, linking the accused to the crime scene.
Acting Amathole District Commissioner, Brigadier Zinikele Freddie, welcomed the outcome, describing it as a significant step in ensuring justice.
She also commended the investigating officer, Lieutenant Colonel Nolusindiso Dywili, for her work on the case, noting that her persistence and dedication contributed to the successful prosecution.
Justice after years of delay
The case highlights the lengthy nature of some serious criminal proceedings, particularly when suspects fail to comply with court processes.
While the sentencing brings closure from a legal perspective, it also underscores ongoing concerns around violence against vulnerable members of society.
