N2 Stays Open Despite Flooding Concerns Near Makhanda

Motorists travelling between Gqeberha and Makhanda have been assured that the N2 at the Assegaai River crossing remains open despite concerns about rising water levels.

The clarification came from Eastern Cape Department of Transport spokesperson Unathi Binqose after reports circulated that the route may have been closed due to flooding.

Responding to an enquiry on Wednesday evening, Binqose said the department was aware of flooding in the area but that conditions had not yet reached a point where a closure was necessary.

“We admit to flooding but it’s not enough to force any closure yet,” Binqose said.

The update comes as heavy rainfall continues to affect parts of the Eastern Cape, with several rivers running high and localised flooding reported in some areas.

Meanwhile, a separate warning was shared regarding water flowing over a section of road near Salem, outside Makhanda. A motorist reported that the river was crossing the roadway near the cricket club and called for officials to assess the situation and assist with traffic management.

At the time of publication, there was no official confirmation that the road had been closed.

Authorities have urged motorists to remain cautious, particularly in low-lying areas, near bridges and river crossings where conditions can change rapidly following further rainfall.
