Businesses operating along Stillwell Street in Komani say conditions in the area have improved significantly following recent municipal operations to remove containers linked to ongoing complaints about filth, dumping, and alleged criminal activity.
The developments come days after concerns raised by businesses in the area were highlighted publicly by Komani News, drawing wider attention to conditions in the street and the impact they were allegedly having on nearby businesses and customers.
Shortly after the concerns were reported, the Enoch Mgijima Local Municipality confirmed that it had begun operations to remove illegally placed containers in parts of Stillwell and Joubert streets.
Business owners told Komani News this week that municipal teams and contractors have continued working in the area, with several containers already removed and more expected to follow.
According to businesses in the street, work resumed early on Tuesday morning as trucks and contractors removed additional containers from the area.
Businesses also told Komani News that municipal officials had engaged directly with some affected property owners and traders during the operation. According to what businesses were told, a number of remaining containers are still subject to ongoing court processes and cannot yet be removed.
Business owners said they were further told that a broader clean-up operation is expected to take place once the outstanding legal matters have been finalised.
Several businesses now say there has already been a visible difference in the area compared to previous weeks.
According to people working in the street, nearby businesses, pedestrians, and customers have reportedly noticed cleaner surroundings and a reduction in alleged drug-related activity in some sections of the area.
The original complaints raised concerns about dumped tyres, oil spills, litter, poor hygiene conditions, and alleged illegal activity negatively affecting nearby businesses and customers.
Municipal operations in the area are continuing.
Komani News previously reported on the complaints raised by businesses in Stillwell Street, as well as the municipality’s response and removal operation.
