A significant breakthrough has been reached for small-scale miners in the Eastern Cape, with leaders from Indwe and the wider Chris Hani District taking up key positions in a newly established provincial mining structure.

This follows ongoing tensions around mining activities in Indwe, where disputes between local miners and government authorities recently placed the community under the spotlight.

New provincial structure established

According to communication shared with Komani News, the Eastern Cape Artisanal and Small Scale Miners Association has now been formally established at provincial level.

The development comes after a meeting held on 18 March 2026 at the Radisson Blu Hotel in Gqeberha, where stakeholders gathered to formalise the structure.

The meeting, which ran from 15:00 to 20:00, resulted in the election of a provincial leadership team representing small-scale miners across the region.

Indwe leader elected chairperson

Buyisile Sydwell Ngqulwana, Deputy Chairperson of the Indwe Small Scale Miners, was elected as the Provincial Chairperson.

Ngqulwana, who is based in the Emalahleni Local Municipality, has been a central figure in recent engagements between miners and authorities.

Meanwhile, Baphiwe Peace Mhlekwa from the Sakhisizwe Small Scale Miners was elected as the Deputy Chairperson.

Both leaders represent the Chris Hani District Municipality, highlighting the district’s growing influence in the small-scale mining sector.

Representation at national level

In a further development, Ngqulwana has also been nominated to serve as Deputy Chairperson at national level, representing the Eastern Cape within the broader artisanal and small-scale mining structure.

This move is expected to strengthen the province’s voice in national discussions around mining regulation, compliance, and development.

A turning point for small-scale miners

The formation of the provincial structure is being seen by stakeholders as a major milestone for the sector.

It is expected to create new opportunities for engagement with government, improve coordination among miners, and potentially pave the way for formalisation of operations.

The development follows earlier reports by Komani News that Indwe miners had called off a planned protest and were moving closer to engagement with the Department of Mineral and Petroleum Resources regarding compliance and permits.

Looking ahead

While challenges remain, particularly around regulatory compliance and mining rights, the establishment of a formal structure could mark a turning point for small-scale miners in the Eastern Cape.

The newly elected provincial leadership is expected to play a key role in shaping the future of the sector and ensuring that the concerns of miners are represented at both provincial and national levels.
