Mabuyane Calls for Unity Among Traditional Leaders in Eastern Cape

Eastern Cape Premier Lubabalo Oscar Mabuyane has called for unity and collective action among traditional and Khoi-San leaders to address the province’s socio-economic challenges.

Speaking at the opening of the Eastern Cape House of Traditional and Khoi-San Leaders in Bhisho, Mabuyane emphasized the importance of collaboration between government and traditional leadership to drive development and uplift communities.

“We must, with resolve, reject any discourse or practices that seek to sow division among us, for in unity lies our strength and the authority of this House,” Mabuyane said.

He highlighted the need to address issues such as poverty, inequality, and unemployment, and called on traditional leaders to play a key role in promoting economic development and social cohesion.

Mabuyane also condemned the “so-called coronation” of an individual not recognized within the framework of indigenous systems of traditional leadership, saying it was an affront to the institution of traditional leadership and the Constitution.

He emphasized that traditional leadership is not self-appointed, but rooted in lineage, legitimacy, and recognition within the framework of laws and customs.

The Premier paid tribute to the late Princess Thembeka “Cuthwana” Sandile and Rev. Dr Ntsumpa Solomzi Nyembenya, recognizing their contributions to leadership and community development.

He said their lives exemplified the values of service, humility, and responsibility, and called on traditional leaders to emulate their example.

Mabuyane outlined the province’s efforts to drive economic growth, including investments in infrastructure, agriculture, and investment promotion.

He emphasized the need for traditional leaders to work with government to unlock economic opportunities and improve the lives of communities.

The event was attended by traditional leaders, government officials, and dignitaries, who pledged to work together to build a united, prosperous, and dignified Eastern Cape Province. Mabuyane concluded by saying, “Let this opening mark a continuous renewal of partnership between government and traditional leadership. Together, we can build a united, prosperous, and dignified Eastern Cape Province.”
