Large-Scale Smuggling Attempt Foiled in Mpumalanga

Delmas, Mpumalanga — Police have recovered 25 pallets of illicit cigarettes valued at an estimated R17.4 million, following a coordinated operation in Sundra on Thursday night. A 43-year-old man from the Kingdom of Eswatini was arrested after officers intercepted a truck carrying concealed contraband.

The operation unfolded at around 22:00 on 05 December 2025, after Delmas police received intelligence about illicit cigarettes allegedly being transported inside large water tanks.

How Police Traced the Truck

According to information provided to Komani News, officers from Delmas Police Station, together with members from Sundra Police Station and private security companies, followed up on a tip-off regarding the suspicious consignment.

Police eventually spotted a truck with two trailers travelling through Sundra. The vehicle was transporting twelve 5 000-litre water tanks, which initially appeared to be ordinary cargo.

However, once officers conducted a closer inspection, they found that all the tanks were filled to capacity with multiple brands of illicit cigarette cartons. The scale of the discovery highlights the increasingly sophisticated methods used by smuggling syndicates attempting to bypass law enforcement in South Africa.

R17.4 Million in Illegal Cigarettes Recovered

Inside the tanks, police uncovered 25 pallets of cigarettes with a combined street value of R17.4 million. The cigarettes were packed in a way designed to avoid detection during routine inspection, but the intelligence-led approach by police ensured the cargo never reached its intended destination.

Suspect to Face Court

The 43-year-old suspect was charged with possession of illicit goods and taken into custody. He is expected to appear before the Delmas District Court on Monday, 08 December 2025.

Authorities say investigations are ongoing, and further arrests could follow as police work to determine the origin of the cigarettes and the potential involvement of organised syndicates.
