Tragedy on N2: Church group taxi crash leaves one dead, eight injured near Makhanda
MAKHANDA/GQEBERHA – One person has died and eight others were injured after a minibus taxi overturned on the N2 between Makhanda (Grahamstown) and Gqeberha (Port Elizabeth) on Sunday evening.
The crash happened at approximately 19:00 under wet and slippery conditions.
According to initial information, the fully loaded taxi was travelling from Middledrift to Gqeberha, carrying church members returning from a service, when the driver allegedly lost control while navigating a curve.
An adult female was declared dead at the scene.
Eight other occupants, including the driver, sustained injuries and were transported to a hospital in Gqeberha for medical treatment.
Authorities have opened a case of culpable homicide at Seven Fountains SAPS, and investigations into the circumstances surrounding the crash are ongoing.
Wet roads, deadly consequences
Early indications suggest that weather conditions may have played a role, with the road reportedly wet at the time of the incident. However, the exact cause of the crash will form part of the police investigation.
The incident adds to growing concerns around road safety on major Eastern Cape routes, particularly during periods of poor weather and increased travel.
Investigation underway
Police are expected to gather further evidence, including statements and possible vehicle assessments, as part of the culpable homicide case.
No further official details have been released at this stage.
