Three Killed in Early Morning R67 Head-On Crash Near Whittlesea
KOMANI, EASTERN CAPE – Three people have died following a devastating head-on collision on the R67 between Seymour and Whittlesea in the early hours of Friday morning, 3 April 2026.
According to the Eastern Cape Department of Transport, the crash occurred at approximately 01:00 and involved a sport utility vehicle (SUV) and a sedan.
Two Burned in Vehicle, Child Escapes
The Department confirmed that the SUV, which was carrying three occupants, caught fire shortly after the collision.
Two people inside the vehicle were declared dead at the scene after the car was engulfed in flames.
A 13-year-old boy who was also travelling in the SUV managed to escape from the burning vehicle. He was rushed to Frontier Hospital, where he is receiving medical treatment.
The driver of the sedan, who was the sole occupant of that vehicle, also died at the scene.
Investigation Underway
Authorities have opened a case of culpable homicide, and investigations are ongoing to determine the cause of the crash.
No further details about the circumstances leading up to the collision have been confirmed at this stage.
MEC Extends Condolences
Eastern Cape Transport MEC Xolile Nqatha expressed condolences to the families affected by the tragedy and highlighted the dangers of road travel during late-night hours.
He described the incident as a devastating reminder of the risks on the province’s roads, particularly during early morning travel.
The MEC also acknowledged the survival of the young boy who managed to escape the burning vehicle and wished him a full recovery.
Ongoing Road Safety Efforts
The Department of Transport says road safety operations across the province are being intensified as part of ongoing efforts to reduce fatalities.
This crash comes during a period of increased traffic volumes across major routes in the Eastern Cape ahead of the Easter weekend, with authorities urging motorists to exercise caution and adhere to traffic regulations.
