Hit-and-run leaves 43-year-old man dead near Cofimvaba

Police are investigating a fatal hit-and-run after a 43-year-old man was struck and killed by a vehicle on the R61 near Cofimvaba on Sunday evening.

The incident happened at about 18:00 on 5 July 2026 on the R61 in the Bridge Camp policing area. Emergency services and police responded to the scene after receiving reports that a pedestrian had been hit by a vehicle.

According to SAPS spokesperson Captain Yolisa Mgolodela, members at the Bridge Camp Police Station’s Client Service Centre received information that a person had been struck by a vehicle, which allegedly failed to stop after the collision.

“When police arrived at the scene they found an African male lying next to the road. He was declared dead at the scene and was later identified as a 43-year-old man from Woodfarm in Gwatyu,” Mgolodela said.

She confirmed that the vehicle involved could not be traced.

A case of hit-and-run has since been opened and registered at Bridge Camp Police Station.

Emergency Medical Services, SAPS, Local Criminal Record Centre officials and forensic services attended the scene. After the necessary investigations at the scene were completed, the man’s body was removed by forensic pathology services.

Police have not released the identity of the deceased, pending the necessary processes.

The circumstances surrounding the incident remain under investigation, and police are working to trace the vehicle and driver involved.
