Severe Thunderstorm Warning for Komani and Chris Hani District
Residents in Komani and surrounding areas in the Chris Hani District Municipality have been warned to prepare for severe thunderstorms expected on Thursday, 5 March 2026.
The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued a Yellow Level 2 warning for severe thunderstorms, expected between 10:00 and 23:59.
The weather alert indicates that storms may result in localised flooding and possible damage to settlements, vehicles and property in affected areas.
Komani among areas at risk
The warning includes several municipalities across the Eastern Cape, including the Chris Hani District Municipality, which covers Komani, Ezibeleni and surrounding towns and rural communities.
Other districts included in the alert are:
-
Dr Beyers Naudé Local Municipality
-
Blue Crane Route Local Municipality
-
Makana Local Municipality
-
Joe Gqabi District Municipality
-
Amathole District Municipality
-
Buffalo City Metropolitan Municipality
For residents in the Komani area, thunderstorms could develop rapidly during the afternoon as temperatures rise, bringing heavy rain, lightning and gusty winds.
Possible impacts from the storms
According to SAWS, the storms may lead to several potential hazards, including:
-
Localised flooding, particularly in low-lying areas
-
Damage to informal settlements or weak structures
-
Damage to vehicles and property
-
Poor driving conditions due to heavy rain
-
Temporary disruptions to outdoor activities
Short periods of intense rainfall are common during severe thunderstorms and can overwhelm drainage systems, leading to water collecting on roads and in residential areas.
Safety advice for residents
Residents in Komani, Ezibeleni and surrounding villages are advised to remain cautious during the warning period.
Basic safety precautions include:
-
Avoid crossing flooded roads or streams.
-
Move vehicles away from areas prone to flooding.
-
Secure loose outdoor items that may be blown by wind.
-
Stay indoors during lightning storms where possible.
-
Exercise caution when driving during heavy rain.
Motorists travelling on regional routes such as the N6 and surrounding roads in the Chris Hani district should also reduce speed during storms and be alert for sudden water pooling on road surfaces.

Weather warnings can change as conditions develop. Residents are encouraged to monitor updates from the South African Weather Service and local authorities throughout the day.
