Indwe Learners Trained as Eco Champions for Environmental Protection

INDWE, EASTERN CAPE – Learners from three schools in Indwe recently took part in a training programme aimed at strengthening youth leadership and environmental responsibility in the Chris Hani District.

The initiative, hosted at Indwe High School on Monday, 2 March, forms part of the Eco Champion Programme, an environmental education initiative designed to equip young people with knowledge and practical skills to protect their surroundings.

The programme is being implemented locally by IZwi Mentorship Hub, an organisation based in Indwe that focuses on empowering youth through mentorship, leadership development and community engagement.

Youth Empowerment Through Environmental Education

IZwi Mentorship Hub was established to support young people in developing skills that enable them to become active leaders within their communities. The organisation places strong emphasis on encouraging responsible citizenship, environmental awareness and social engagement.

Through mentorship programmes and leadership initiatives, the hub aims to nurture young people who are not only academically capable but also socially conscious and willing to contribute positively to their communities.

This year’s environmental training forms part of an expanded effort to build awareness around climate change, sustainability and environmental protection among school learners.

Support From International and Local Partners

The programme is being rolled out with support from the TUI Care Foundation in partnership with the Masifunde Learner Development Changemaker Network.

Through this collaboration, the Eco Champion Programme is being replicated in local communities, providing learners with tools and knowledge to better understand climate change and the importance of environmental sustainability.

Participants are trained in practical environmental protection strategies, including ways to develop eco-tourism initiatives and projects that promote sustainable use of natural resources.

Learners From Three Schools Participate

The recent training session brought together learners from Ida High School, Indwe High School and Lukhanyo High School.

During the workshop, learners were introduced to various methods and tools that can help them design and implement learner-led environmental campaigns within their schools.

The aim is to empower students to take the lead in raising awareness among their peers, families and the wider community about environmental responsibility.

Learners were encouraged to identify environmental challenges affecting their communities and develop initiatives that can help address those issues in practical ways.

Building Future Community Leaders

Beyond environmental awareness, the Eco Champion Programme also focuses on strengthening leadership and teamwork among young participants.

By taking responsibility for environmental campaigns and sustainability initiatives in their schools, learners are able to develop problem-solving, communication and leadership skills.

These experiences are intended to prepare them to become role models and community leaders who can influence positive change.

Organisers say that empowering youth with these skills can contribute to building a stronger culture of environmental responsibility across the Chris Hani District.

The training also emphasised the importance of collaboration between schools, families and communities in protecting the environment.

By encouraging learners to share their knowledge and lead awareness campaigns, the programme aims to spark broader community action around sustainability and environmental protection.

Through initiatives like the Eco Champion Programme, organisations involved hope to inspire young people to take ownership of environmental issues and contribute to long-term solutions that benefit their communities.
