Planned Shutdown Looms Over Eliteni Mine Dispute in Indwe
A dispute over operations at the Eliteni mine in Indwe is escalating, with small-scale miners and community leadership now planning a shutdown in response to recent developments.
Buyisile Nqulwana, the Indwe chairperson of Small Scale Miners, confirmed that he was at a police station alongside Headman Khali following a meeting with the local municipality. The meeting included the municipal manager and senior officials and focused on ongoing concerns raised about small-scale mining activities in the area.
According to Nqulwana, the situation intensified after developments at the Eliteni mine, which has been under business rescue since 2015.
He said community representatives were called to intervene after learning that a former manager had returned to the mine. It is alleged that this individual has begun mobilising community members from Guba to return to work at the site.
This development, Nqulwana said, raised serious concerns among local residents and traditional leadership.
Nqulwana confirmed that he accompanied Headman Khali to meet with the individual to seek clarity on the situation. During that engagement, it was indicated that the return to operations was linked to an appointment made through the business rescue process.
However, this explanation has not resolved concerns from the community and small-scale miners.
In response, a formal letter outlining grievances has been submitted to those overseeing the business rescue. The concerns relate to the management of the mine and the process being followed regarding its operations.
Nqulwana further confirmed that plans are now in place for a shutdown of the Eliteni mine. He stated that he is currently at the police station to apply for official permission for the shutdown, which is expected to take place on 15 July.
The situation remains tense, with ongoing disagreements between community members, small-scale miners, and those linked to the mine’s operations.
Further engagements between stakeholders are expected as the proposed shutdown date approaches.
