SAPS Arrests Two for Drug Offences in Komani Festive Crackdown

Komani, Eastern Cape — The South African Police Service (SAPS) in the Chris Hani District has arrested two suspects on allegations of possession of and dealing in drugs following a targeted law-enforcement operation conducted on Sunday, 21 December 2025.

The arrests were made by the Chris Hani District Task Team during Operation Safer Festive Season, an ongoing SAPS initiative aimed at strengthening safety and security during the high-risk holiday period, when crime levels traditionally increase due to heightened movement, festivities and alcohol consumption.

According to SAPS, the operation focused on high-visibility policing in identified hotspot areas across the district. Law-enforcement activities included stop-and-search actions, searches for illegal firearms, the closure of illegal shebeens, and intensified efforts to disrupt drug trafficking networks operating within communities.

Police say the arrests form part of a broader strategy to remove drugs from the streets, reduce violent crime, and protect vulnerable community members during the festive season. Drugs remain a key driver of criminal activity, contributing to assaults, robberies, domestic violence and other serious offences across the Eastern Cape.

Focus on Crime Hotspots

The Chris Hani District has been identified as a priority area for festive-season operations due to increased population movement between towns and rural areas, as well as heightened social activity during December. SAPS deployed members strategically to areas known for drug-related activity and illegal liquor trading.

Officers conducted roadblocks, patrols and compliance inspections, while also engaging with community members to reinforce the message that criminal behaviour will not be tolerated during the festive period.

Ongoing Festive Season Operations

Operation Safer Festive Season is being rolled out nationally, with district-level task teams working to ensure a visible police presence and swift response to criminal activity. SAPS has indicated that similar operations will continue throughout December and into the New Year, with a strong focus on drugs, illegal firearms, alcohol-related offences and violent crime.

Residents are encouraged to cooperate with law-enforcement officials during stop-and-search actions and to report criminal activity anonymously through SAPS Crime Stop or local police stations.

The two suspects are expected to appear in court once formal charges have been finalised. SAPS has confirmed that investigations remain ongoing and that further arrests are possible as operations continue across the Chris Hani District.

Authorities have reiterated their commitment to ensuring that communities across Komani and the wider district can enjoy a safer and more secure festive season.
