Nomzamo Community Switches Allegiance to The Independents
Hundreds of Nomzamo residents in Ward 15 have joined The Independents.
The scores of Nomzamo residents called The Independents leader Ken Clark and the party leadership to a meeting on Tuesday afternoon.
Speaking at the meeting Jackson Taliwe said they had a meeting with The Independents, with the hope of changing the situation of the ward.
“Everything we get here is because we have fought for it. We are changing the organisation and joining The Independents which we think will listen to us, unlike the ANC where we come from,” said Taliwe.
He said they have waisted a lot of years voting for the same party but their situation has not changed.
Another resident Khaya Majovu said they are tired of fighting for the ANC and want change.
“We have done a lot and are ready to give The Independents power. We want change here, and we are tired of people who don’t want change,” said Majovu.
Local businessman Jomo Jaxa said they are led by people who are taking the ward backwards.
“It is up to us to say that we want to be led by the current leadership which is taking us backwards. I am not going to be part of something that takes people forward,” he said.
Jaxa said people of Nomzamo want change, and he has tried through his business to bring change in the area.
“I think it’s about time we bring change into the ward,” he said.
Clark said the people of Nomzamo are disgruntled and are looking for change.
“We have been fighting to change the municipality but the habits don’t change. We need to get this municipality to doing what needs to be done. It’s not difficult,” said Clark.
He said collecting the money and spending it in the right places is what is needed in the municipality.
“The decay has been happening for a long time in this municipality and it’s not improving, its getting worse. We need to put a stop to it and only people who can do it is the people through their vote.
“I am happing that they have decided to change. This community is very active, it came to us and it has drawn a line on the sand,” said Clark.
The Independents councillor Amzisile Titus said Nomzamo was built in the 1990’s but it has no police station and no clinic in Nomzamo.
“People have to go to Mlungisi police station to report a case and Lizo Ngcana clinic to get treatment. The high masts in the area are not working and children have turned to drugs as there is no work,” he said.
He said they have raised issues of water with the municipality but nothing has been done and have not received any answers from Chris Hani District Municipality.
“Komani is ours and when they see that they don’t get what they want here, they will leave us here,” he said.
He told those joining The Independents that there is no joining fee for The Independents and no one will be saying they are in good standing or not.
