MEC Nqatha Steps Into Engcobo Storm Over Taxi Protests
MEC Nqatha to Visit Engcobo Amid Shutdown and Transport Tensions
Engcobo, Eastern Cape – Eastern Cape Transport MEC, Xolile Nqatha, is scheduled to visit Engcobo tomorrow morning to engage directly with taxi operators amid a peaceful shutdown that has disrupted the town’s economic activity and essential services.
Shutdown Brings Town to a Standstill
Taxi operators, who provide the primary mode of transport for workers in retail and government departments, have parked their vehicles along streets and on the outskirts of town. This shutdown has brought local commuting and economic activity to a halt.
Protest Focuses on Long-Distance Bus Operations
Operators have raised concerns about long-distance buses allegedly operating without valid permits or violating existing permit conditions. According to reports, one of the largest operators in the long-distance bus industry has been singled out as a key instigator in the ongoing tensions.
Law Enforcement Monitoring the Situation
Engcobo, strategically located along the R61 corridor – a major route linking the Western Cape to Komani, Mthatha, and other parts of the Eastern Cape – has been closely monitored by law enforcement agencies throughout the day. Authorities say the situation remains tense but is under control.
Premier Mabuyane Engages with Protestors
Eastern Cape Premier, Lubabalo Oscar Mabuyane, who had official engagements in Engcobo today, also took time to address and listen to the concerns of the protestors.
MEC Nqatha: “We Take These Concerns Seriously”
The Department of Transport confirmed that MEC Nqatha said:
“We take these concerns seriously and are here to listen, mediate and work towards an amicable and lawful resolution. Our priority is to restore calm, ensure compliance with transport regulations, and safeguard the livelihoods that depend on a functioning transport system. We appeal for continued calm and cooperation from all stakeholders as we pursue a sustainable solution.”
Department of Transport Steps In
The Department of Transport is working closely with law enforcement and relevant transport bodies to stabilise the situation. However, the shutdown has already had a notable impact on economic activity and public services in the town.
Residents and commuters are urged to plan travel accordingly and stay updated through official channels as MEC Nqatha engages with local stakeholders tomorrow.
