MEC Kontsiwe Visits Flood-Ravaged Farms in Kouga-Koukamma
Kouga-Koukamma, Eastern Cape – Eastern Cape MEC for Agriculture, Rural Development, Agrarian Reform and Veterans Affairs, Nonceba Kontsiwe, has visited farms in the Kouga-Koukamma area that were severely affected by recent flooding.
The visit took place as assessments continue into the impact of the floods on farming communities and agricultural infrastructure across the region.
According to the Department, significant damage has been reported in several areas. The floods have affected agricultural infrastructure, road networks, water infrastructure, farming operations, crop production areas, cultivated land and rural livelihoods.
The extent of the damage highlights the challenges now facing farmers and rural communities as they work to recover from the disaster.
MEC Kontsiwe’s visit formed part of the department’s efforts to assess conditions on the ground and engage directly with affected farming operations.
Flood damage to agricultural infrastructure can have far-reaching consequences, affecting food production, access to markets and the ability of farmers to continue operations. Damage to roads and water infrastructure can also hamper recovery efforts and place additional pressure on rural communities.
The Eastern Cape has experienced severe weather conditions in recent weeks, with flooding reported in several parts of the province.
The Department of Agriculture said the floods have had a substantial impact on farming activities in the Kouga-Koukamma area, with assessments ongoing to determine the full extent of the losses.
Further updates are expected as government departments continue to evaluate the damage and consider support measures for affected farmers and communities.
