Komani Cemetery Receives First Major Cleanup In Long Time

Municipal workers have begun clearing overgrown grass and vegetation at the Komani Cemetery, marking what many residents say is the first significant cleanup operation there in a long time.

Workers from the Enoch Mgijima Local Municipality were seen this week using brush cutters, rakes and other equipment to clear pathways and gravesites that had become heavily overgrown.

The cleanup follows longstanding complaints from residents and grieving families who said parts of the cemetery had deteriorated badly, making it difficult to access some graves.

In October 2025, Komani News reported on concerns over the state of the cemetery, with community members describing the conditions as neglectful and distressing for families visiting loved ones.

Secenes from the cemetery this week show teams cutting thick grass and weeds around headstones and burial plots across several sections of the grounds.

Some residents welcomed the cleanup, saying they hope it becomes part of a regular maintenance programme rather than a once-off intervention.

The condition of cemeteries remains an emotional issue for many families in Komani, where burial sites are regarded as places of dignity, remembrance and respect.

While large sections have now been cleared, some parts of the cemetery still appear overgrown, suggesting more work may still be needed.

The cleanup also comes as service delivery issues continue to remain under public scrutiny ahead of next year’s local government elections.
