Red bridge to shut down for five months for maintenance

KOMANI – Pedestrians who use the footbridge next to the Queenstown Railway Station will have to change their daily walking routines starting tomorrow.

Transnet has announced that the structure, popularly known as the “Red Bridge,” will be closed to the public to allow for a major maintenance project to take place.

Essential repairs for safety

The transport parastatal confirmed that the bridge needs urgent work to ensure it remains safe for the hundreds of residents who use it every day to get to work, school, and the shops. The project is officially scheduled to kick off tomorrow, 18 January 2026.

Contractors will be on-site to carry out the necessary repairs, and the bridge will remain off-limits until the work is fully completed. According to the project timeline, the bridge is only expected to reopen on 30 May 2026.

While the bridge is closed, residents are being urged to leave home a bit earlier to make sure they reach their destinations on time. Transnet has asked the public to be patient while these important safety upgrades are being done on the railway infrastructure.

To help people get around, the company has pointed out alternative routes that can be used to cross the railway lines safely.

Alternative routes for residents

Residents who usually rely on the Red Bridge are advised to use the following paths instead:

• The Kingsway Avenue bridge.

• The Bachelor Street steel footbridge.

By using these alternative routes, walkers can avoid the construction site and stay safe while the work is being finished over the next few months.
