Constitutional Court Orders IEC to Include 181 ANC Candidates on Ballots.
The Constitutional Court has ruled in favour of the African National Congress (ANC), ordering the Electoral Commission (IEC) to include 181 ANC candidates on ballot papers in six municipalities ahead of the 4 November elections.
The affected municipalities include Mangaung Metro, Sundays River Valley, Walter Sisulu, Ngquza Hill, Port St Johns and uMshwathi.
The dispute arose after the ANC failed to finalise certain candidate lists before the August deadline, despite uploading candidate information onto the IEC’s electronic system.
Judge Rammaka Mathopo delivered the court’s order setting aside the IEC’s decision to reject the affected nominations.
The ruling has raised questions about equal treatment, as the IEC previously indicated that more than 40 political parties had experienced similar submission problems.
Floyd Shivambu’s Afrika Mayibuye movement has called for equal treatment of parties affected by the deadline.
The IEC has urged political parties to cooperate and reassured voters that election preparations remain a priority.
