Government Proposes R10 Billion Fuel Levy Relief for Motorists.
Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana has proposed a R10 billion fuel levy relief package aimed at easing the cost of living for South Africans.
The proposal, outlined in the Medium-Term Budget Policy Statement (MTBPS), would see the fuel levy on diesel reduced by R3 per litre and petrol by R1.50 per litre from 4 November to 1 December 2026.
From 2 December 2026 until 5 January 2027, the relief would continue at lower rates, with diesel reduced by R1.50 per litre and petrol by R1 per litre.
According to National Treasury, the R10 billion will come from revenue overruns recorded during the 2025/26 financial year.
The funds, previously allocated to the Central Energy Fund (CEF), will be returned to the National Revenue Fund to finance the relief.
Godongwana said the measures are intended to assist households and businesses without compromising the sustainability of the national budget.
The proposed reductions could provide temporary relief to motorists and transport operators, although actual pump prices will remain subject to other fuel pricing factors.
