Illegal Power Racket Uncovered in Nomzamo
A crackdown on electricity theft in Nomzamo has exposed what appears to be a well-organised racket involving residents who profited from illegal connections to the MQ informal settlement.
During a recent operation, officials dismantled and confiscated bundles of dangerous overhead cables running between formal households and MQ. The web of live wires — crudely strung across roads and open spaces — posed a severe risk to residents, including children who play near the area.
Investigators revealed that the scheme went beyond simple “sharing of power.” One resident, found with a tampered electricity meter, had been illegally supplying dozens of MQ households. In return, those households were reportedly paying a monthly fee for access to the stolen supply.
“This wasn’t just theft — it was a business,” one official said. “Someone was collecting money every month while risking lives and damaging infrastructure.”
Electricity infrastructure was removed from households discovered to be supplying the informal settlement, with authorities warning that such practices cause frequent outages, overload the system, and increase the risk of fatal accidents.
Community members expressed mixed reactions. While some supported the clampdown, citing safety concerns, others admitted that the high cost of formal electricity leaves many families desperate for alternatives.
Authorities have promised continued enforcement operations, but the incident has raised tough questions about poverty, access to services, and the exploitation of vulnerable communities by those turning electricity theft into a money-making enterprise.

EMLM must take into account, all the buildings for student accommodation which they have allowed. Erven which had one house with maybe 3 or 4 residents have been demolished and huge student accommodation for 20 – 40 people has been built with no upgrading of electrical infrastructure. Water and sanitation the same. EMLM needs to take responsibility for this. Extra geysers, stoves, heaters etc.. then they have the audacity to point fingers at everyone else.
