Horror at Electrical Substation — Workers Badly Burned
Pietermaritzburg, KwaZulu-Natal
A shocking explosion tore through an electrical substation on Old Howick Road in Pietermaritzburg on Monday afternoon, leaving two workers seriously injured and sparking a massive emergency response.
The incident occurred at approximately 12:00 PM, sending shockwaves through the area as emergency crews rushed to the scene.
Substation Explosion Leaves Workers Fighting for Their Lives
According to KwaZulu Private Ambulance, paramedics arrived at the substation to find a scene of devastation after what appeared to be a catastrophic electrical blast.
Two contractors, who were performing maintenance work at the facility, sustained severe burn injuries in the explosion.
The first worker, found in critical condition, suffered extensive burns across their back and arms. Paramedics provided Advanced Life Support (ALS) on scene, working urgently to stabilise the patient before transport.
The second contractor sustained serious burns to both arms and was also treated at the scene. Both victims were stabilised and rushed to hospital for specialised burn care.
Swift Response from Emergency Services
KwaZulu Private Ambulance, the South African Police Service (SAPS), and the Fire Department responded rapidly, securing the scene and preventing further hazards.
Authorities immediately launched an investigation into the cause of the explosion, which remains unknown at this stage. Officials confirmed there was no disruption to traffic along Old Howick Road despite the severity of the incident.
Investigation Underway Into Substation Blast
Investigators are expected to focus on possible equipment failure or electrical faults as potential causes of the explosion. The Department of Labour may also be called in to assess workplace safety protocols.
The blast has drawn attention to the high-risk conditions faced by electrical technicians and contractors, who often work with powerful, unpredictable energy systems to maintain South Africa’s infrastructure.
Workers Recovering After Tragic Incident
Both injured workers remain under close medical care, with doctors monitoring their recovery. Their names have not yet been released, pending notification of families.
Authorities praised the swift and coordinated effort by first responders, whose decisive actions prevented further casualties.
The incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangerous environments faced by those working in energy and infrastructure maintenance, where one small spark can lead to disaster.
