A peaceful hike in the Tsitsikamma Forest ended in tragedy after 74-year-old Langebaan resident Hermie van Zyl went missing and was later found deceased near the iconic Tsitsikamma Big Tree.

Mr van Zyl had been hiking with friends on Tuesday, 21 October 2025, when he reportedly deviated from the designated trail and did not return. His absence prompted a full-scale search operation, mobilising multiple agencies across the region.

Extensive Multi-Agency Search

The search effort included teams from the Mountain Club of South Africa, the South African Police Service (SAPS) Land and Sea Search and Rescue, and the SAPS Dog Unit. Over several days, these teams combed dense forest areas and rugged terrain, determined to locate the missing pensioner.

The search concluded on Wednesday, 30 October 2025, when Mr van Zyl’s body was discovered near the Tsitsikamma Big Tree Forest Office. The location’s inaccessibility by road required specialised assistance to safely recover the body.
