Eastern Cape Welcomes 116 New Year Babies, MEC Bukiwe Fanta Visits Frere Hospital
The Eastern Cape marked the start of 2026 with a busy day in its hospitals as Acting Health MEC, Ms Bukiwe Fanta, visited Frere Hospital in East London to see the New Year babies.
As of 17h30 on New Year’s Day, a total of 116 babies had been delivered across the province, comprising 68 girls and 48 boys.
Frere Hospital recorded several of these deliveries, highlighting the high number of births across both urban and rural facilities. The MEC’s visit focused on observing hospital operations and the wellbeing of the newborns and mothers.
The Eastern Cape Department of Health continues to monitor births and ensure that all mothers and babies receive proper care.
