Eastern Cape Legislature Visits Lower Mgwalana Near Cacadu Over Service Delivery Petition

The Eastern Cape Legislature has visited the Lower Mgwalana community near Cacadu in Emalahleni Local Municipality as part of an inquiry into a petition submitted by residents over ongoing service delivery concerns.

The engagement formed part of a pre-petition inquiry process aimed at gathering additional information regarding issues raised by the community in a petition submitted to the Office of the Speaker of the Eastern Cape Legislature.

The meeting was chaired by Mlibo Qoboshiyane, Chairperson of the Standing Committee on Public Participation, Petitions and Public Education.

Members of the Legislature who formed part of the delegation included Wongama Gela, Mandlakazi Keleku, Mxolisi Buya and Sindile Toni.

The delegation was joined by Emalahleni Local Municipality leadership led by Mayor Councillor Nontombizanele Koni. Also in attendance were Portfolio Head for Infrastructure Development Councillor Tandeka Kulashe, Ward Councillor Peter Nkohla and representatives from various government departments.

During the engagement, community members, led by the Mgwalana Development Forum, presented concerns contained in the petition. According to the municipality, the issues raised relate mainly to service delivery challenges affecting residents in the area.

Legislature representatives committed to engaging with all relevant government departments to obtain detailed feedback and progress reports on each matter raised by the community.

The delegation further indicated that it would return to Lower Mgwalana to provide residents with feedback once responses had been received from the responsible departments.

According to the Legislature’s undertaking, the matter will only be regarded as finalised once the community has received satisfactory responses to all concerns raised in the petition.
