BHISHO – The Eastern Cape Department of Education (ECDoE) is in mourning following the announcement of the passing of Thandaza Koyo, a towering figure in the province’s educational and labour relations landscape.

In a media statement released on December 29, 2025, Education MEC Fundile Gade and Head of Department Sharon Maasdorp expressed their profound shock and sadness at the news. Koyo, who most recently served as the Chief Negotiator for the South African Democratic Teacher’s Union (SADTU) within the provincial chambers, was a former Chairperson of the Provincial Education Labour Relations Chamber (PELRC).

A Legacy of “Labour Peace”

MEC Fundile Gade hailed Koyo as a “seasoned negotiator” and a “selfless egalitarian” whose career spanned several decades. Koyo’s professional journey saw him rise through the ranks of the education sector, serving as an educator and school principal before becoming a prominent Trade Unionist.

“Koyo made an indelible contribution in the sector as he contributed in the building and establishment of bargaining platforms which helped maintain and guarantee labour peace,” MEC Gade stated.

The MEC further emphasized that Koyo’s work extended beyond simple negotiations, describing him as a “gallant” figure who contributed significantly to the “democratic project” and the freedoms currently enjoyed within the South African education system.
