The Eastern Cape Provincial Government on Monday joined the Dumke family, members of the sporting fraternity and the broader community in Chebe Village, Centane, to bid farewell to one of the province’s most celebrated daughters, the late Ms Lusanda Dumke. She was honoured with a Special Provincial Official Funeral (Category 2) in recognition of her outstanding contribution to sport and community development.

The funeral brought together government leaders, rugby administrators, former teammates, young athletes and community members, reflecting the wide impact Dumke had both on and off the field. Provincial and national flags were flown at half-mast as a mark of respect, underscoring the significance of her legacy to the Eastern Cape and South Africa at large.

From Centane to the World Stage

Born and raised in Centane, Lusanda Dumke’s journey from a rural Eastern Cape village to the highest levels of women’s rugby remains a source of pride for the province. She rose to national and international prominence as a Springbok Women’s rugby player and captain, earning respect for her leadership, discipline and commitment to excellence.

Within provincial rugby, Dumke played a pivotal role in Border Rugby structures, where she was widely regarded as a mentor and role model for younger players. Her leadership extended beyond match days, helping to strengthen women’s rugby pathways and promote inclusion in a sport traditionally dominated by men.

A Leader Beyond the Field

While Dumke’s sporting achievements were widely celebrated, speakers at the funeral highlighted that her impact went far beyond rugby. She was a committed community builder and the founder of the Lusanda Dumke Foundation, an initiative focused on empowering young people through sport, education and social development.

Through the foundation, Dumke worked to create opportunities for youth, particularly in under-resourced communities, using sport as a tool to instil discipline, confidence and hope. Her work resonated strongly in Centane and surrounding areas, where she remained deeply connected despite her national and international success.

The eulogy was delivered by the Deputy Minister for Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, Prince Zolile Burns-Ncamashe, on behalf of Eastern Cape Premier Lubabalo Oscar Mabuyane. The provincial leadership described Dumke as a courageous and principled leader whose success was always matched by a strong sense of responsibility to uplift others.

The Category 2 Provincial Official Funeral reflected her status as a person who made a significant contribution to the province in the fields of sport and social development. Such funerals are reserved for individuals whose lives and work have brought honour to the Eastern Cape and inspired broader society.

A Lasting Legacy for Women in Sport

Dumke’s passing has been felt deeply across the sporting community, particularly among women athletes who saw in her a symbol of possibility and progress. Her career demonstrated that athletes from rural communities could reach the highest levels while remaining grounded and committed to giving back.

As mourners gathered in Chebe Village, the atmosphere was one of both sorrow and pride — sorrow at the loss of a beloved daughter of the soil, and pride in a life lived with purpose, resilience and service. Many young people in attendance wore rugby jerseys, a visible reminder of the generations she inspired.
