Dutywa Raid: Illegal Alcohol and Food Sellers Busted

Dutywa, Eastern Cape – Local law enforcement in Dutywa carried out a major crackdown on illegal alcohol and food vendors yesterday, resulting in the arrest of four foreign nationals. The operation, led by municipal enforcement officers from Mbhashe Municipality, targeted unlicensed businesses accused of selling expired food, illicit alcohol, and other prohibited items.

Authorities confiscated large quantities of alcohol, expired food products, illegal cigarettes, and equipment used to manufacture counterfeit goods. Several unlicensed shops were also shut down during the operation.

Lubabalo Mbaleni, Commander of Public Safety, said, “The aim of this operation is to root out criminal activity and ensure the safety of residents and the security of community spaces.”

Residents in the area described the conditions inside some of the shops as unbearable due to the strong odour from expired food and poor sanitation. In some cases, sellers attempted to mask the smell with perfumes, but the stench remained noticeable.

Many of the businesses targeted were operating without municipal permits or official documentation. One of the foreign nationals arrested reportedly shouted during the raid, expressing distress in their own language.

The municipality warned that similar enforcement operations will continue to ensure public safety and compliance with food and alcohol regulations.

Authorities urge residents to report any illegal trading activities to the police to prevent health risks and criminal activity in the community.
