Chris Hani Easter Roadblocks Net Thousands in Fines

A coordinated series of Easter safety operations across the Chris Hani District has resulted in hundreds of vehicles being stopped, thousands of motorists checked, and significant fines issued, as law enforcement ramps up visibility on key routes during one of the busiest travel periods of the year.

The operations, conducted on 2 April 2026, form part of the South African Police Service (SAPS) Safer Easter Holiday campaign. The initiative is aimed at improving road safety, preventing crime, and maintaining a strong law enforcement presence as increased traffic flows through the district.

Chris Hani is widely regarded as a major transit corridor linking provinces, particularly along routes such as the N6 and R61, which see heavy volumes of long-distance travel during public holidays.

Multi-agency deployment across the district

The roadblocks brought together multiple enforcement and emergency stakeholders. SAPS members were supported by specialised units, traffic officers, municipal officials, emergency rescue services, as well as fire and disaster management teams.

The operations focused on several key priorities:

• Detection of stolen vehicles
• Prevention of stock theft
• Identification of unlicensed firearms
• Stop-and-search operations
• Enforcement of the Road Traffic Act

Police visibility was heightened at key points where vehicles from outside the province are known to pass through the district.

Komani roadblock records high activity

In Komani, a roadblock was conducted on the N6 near the Stock Theft Unit offices.

According to SAPS:

• 522 vehicles were stopped and searched
• 1,300 people were searched
• Fines to the value of R33,000 were issued

Authorities also used the opportunity to engage directly with motorists. Pamphlets were distributed and explained, covering topics such as illegal firearm possession, the Arrive Alive campaign, home safety during holidays, and child safety while out shopping.

Enforcement across Khowa, Ngcobo and Nxuba

Similar operations were rolled out across other parts of the district:

Khowa (R410, Gushingalo Junction):

• 241 vehicles stopped and searched
• 373 people searched
• 72 pieces of luggage searched
• R21,800 in fines issued

Ngcobo:

• 451 vehicles searched
• R27,500 in fines issued

Nxuba:

• 80 vehicles searched
• R43,100 in fines issued

In some of these operations, the Eastern Cape Department of Transport provincial office participated as an additional stakeholder.

Police respond to increased Easter travel

The operations come at a time when traffic volumes across the Eastern Cape typically surge, with vehicles travelling between provinces for the Easter weekend.

Chris Hani District Commissioner, Major General Rudolph Adolph, is pleased with the zeal and determination by his foot soldiers. Moreover Chris Hani is an entry point from other provinces that see an opportunity to infiltrate and perpertuate criminal activities in the presumed to be harmless province .The foot soldiers are therefore proving the contrary.

Operations expected to continue

Authorities have signalled that similar operations will continue throughout the Easter period as part of ongoing efforts to maintain safety on the roads and within communities.

Motorists are urged to comply with traffic laws and cooperate with law enforcement officials as holiday travel continues.
