Antonio Carels joins Eastern Cape Legislature after swearing-in

The Eastern Cape Provincial Legislature has a new member after Hon. Antonio Carels was sworn in today, filling the seat vacated by ANC MPL Anele Lizo following his resignation.

Speaker of the Legislature, Helen Sauls-August, welcomed Carels during the swearing-in ceremony. Under Section 107 of the Constitution, all MPLs must swear or affirm faithfulness to the Republic and obedience to the Constitution before taking up their legislative duties.

Carels brings extensive public service experience to the provincial chamber. He served as a Ward Councillor from 2006 to 2011, was former Deputy Chairperson of the Oversight Committee, now the Municipal Public Accounts Committee, and previously held the position of ANC Whip in the Buffalo City Metropolitan Municipality.

“The new MPL brings a wealth of experience in public service and governance,” the Legislature said in a statement.

Carels received a bipartisan reception on his first day. The Official Opposition, represented by DA MPL Horatio Hendricks, extended a warm welcome and wished him success in his new role.

Deputy Speaker Vuyo Jali also congratulated Carels and reminded him of the Legislature’s core responsibilities. “The Legislature’s core mandates are law-making, public participation and oversight, which Hon. Carels will now play a role in advancing,” Jali said.

Addressing Carels directly, Jali stressed the conduct expected of members. “As an Honourable Member, you are expected to conduct yourself in accordance with the Standing Rules and the values and principles of the Legislature. I know you are not going to disappoint the people who have entrusted you with this responsibility, and I know you are equal to the task,” he said.

Carels now takes his seat as an ANC representative in the Eastern Cape Provincial Legislature with immediate effect.
