Cofimvaba Murder Case: Man Sentenced to 20 Years’ Imprisonment

A 30-year-old man has been sentenced to 20 years’ direct imprisonment for murder following a case heard in the Cofimvaba Regional Court.

According to a media statement issued by Eastern Cape police spokesperson Captain Yolisa Mgolodela, Thobela Mafumana was sentenced on 31 March 2026 in connection with the killing of his girlfriend in July last year.

Details of the incident

The court heard that the incident took place on 6 July 2025 at Nququ Administration Area in the Emahlathini locality. On the day of the incident, the deceased, aged 24 at the time, was socialising at a homestead together with Mafumana and another individual.

An argument reportedly broke out between the couple during the gathering. They subsequently left the homestead together.

Police said that a short while later, Mafumana returned to the same homestead and informed the witness that he had killed his girlfriend. He allegedly told the witness that he had assaulted her and dragged her while they were on their way back to their residence.

The deceased sustained multiple injuries and was later confirmed dead.

Arrest and court process

Mafumana was arrested following the incident and remained in the justice system through multiple court appearances leading up to his sentencing.

The Cofimvaba Regional Court ultimately found him guilty on charges of murder, alternatively classified as femicide, and handed down a sentence of 20 years’ direct imprisonment.

Police reaction

Chris Hani District Commissioner, Major General Rudolph Adolph, welcomed the outcome of the case. According to the statement, he said the sentence should serve as a strong warning to others who commit violent crimes.

The South African Police Service reiterated its stance against violent offences, particularly those involving intimate partners, noting the seriousness with which such matters are treated.
