The South African Youth Council (SAYC) in the Chris Hani region has raised serious concerns over recent violent incidents and ongoing disruptions at Walter Sisulu University’s Komani campus, warning that the situation could have far-reaching consequences for students and the broader community.

In a media statement issued on 26 March 2026, SAYC described incidents circulating on social media showing students involved in violent confrontations, including throwing chairs during a mass meeting. The organisation said these developments follow a period of strikes and shutdowns that have disrupted academic activities at the campus.

Concerns over safety and academic disruption

According to SAYC, the instability has created widespread concern among students, parents, and the local community. The organisation emphasised the importance of the university in the region, noting that it plays a critical role in providing access to higher education for young people in Komani and surrounding areas.

The council further highlighted that Walter Sisulu University contributes significantly to the local economy, supporting businesses and driving socio-economic development in the district.

Fears of potential campus relocation

SAYC expressed particular concern about the possibility of the campus relocating due to ongoing instability. The organisation warned that such a move could negatively affect access to education for local students and harm the local economy.

Many young people from the Chris Hani District are currently enrolled at the university, while others aspire to study there in future. The council said any disruption to the institution’s presence in Komani would have serious long-term implications.

The organisation said its goal is to help find sustainable solutions through dialogue and cooperation between all stakeholders.
