SAPS Shoe Drive Brings Hope to Learners in Komani Area

A community-driven initiative led by the South African Police Service (SAPS) in Molteno has brought much-needed support and dignity to schoolchildren across parts of the Chris Hani District, including Komani and surrounding areas.

Between 16 and 25 March 2026, SAPS members rolled out a school shoes distribution roadshow under the leadership of Station Commander Lieutenant Colonel HL Winnaar. The initiative, described as a “journey of hope”, aimed to address a simple but serious challenge affecting learners — the lack of proper school shoes.

Addressing a Real Barrier to Education

According to SAPS, the idea for the project dates back to 2024, when Lieutenant Colonel Winnaar identified that some children were missing school because they did not have shoes to wear. Motivated by her concern for the community, she began seeking sponsorships to turn the idea into a reality.

The roadshow reached several schools, including St Bede Primary School in Tylden, Maria Louw High School in Mlungisi, Nonesi Primary School, and Mpendulo Primary School.

Learners at these schools received school shoes, helping to remove a key barrier to consistent attendance and participation in class.

More Than Just Shoes

Beyond the distribution of footwear, the initiative focused on restoring dignity and strengthening relationships between police and the community.

SAPS members engaged directly with learners through one-on-one sessions, creating a safe and supportive environment. In a symbolic act of care, officers also washed learners’ feet and trimmed their toenails — a gesture aimed at promoting hygiene, dignity, and compassion.

Police say these engagements play an important role in building trust with young people. In some cases, learners are able to report concerns, including crime or abuse, in a safe space. Where necessary, departments such as Social Development are brought in to provide support, while law enforcement processes are followed where required.

Multi-Stakeholder Support

The success of the roadshow was supported by a range of stakeholders, including the Community Policing Forum (CPF), Spiritual Crime Prevention (SCP), SAPS Youth Desk, educators, ward councillors, and the Women’s Network.

Their involvement highlights the collaborative approach often needed to address social challenges affecting children and communities.

Recognising Young Leadership

During the event at Maria Louw High School, District Commissioner Major General Rudolph Adolph officiated the awarding of a medal and certificate to a Deputy Junior Commissioner — a learner at the school — in recognition of youth leadership.

National Recognition for Local Leadership

Lieutenant Colonel Winnaar’s work has also received national recognition. She was previously honoured with an award from National Commissioner General Fannie Masemola for her leadership, dedication, and commitment to community upliftment.

Building Trust Through Action

Initiatives like this reflect SAPS’ broader efforts to strengthen relationships with communities, particularly young people, through visible and meaningful action.

While policing often focuses on crime prevention and enforcement, programmes such as the school shoes roadshow highlight a different approach — one centred on care, support, and long-term community trust.
