Eastern Cape Health Strengthens Specialist Services at Frere Hospital
The Eastern Cape Department of Health is set to strengthen specialised and tertiary healthcare services in the province with the official welcoming of newly appointed medical specialists and medical officers at Frere Hospital in East London.
The welcoming ceremony will be led by Eastern Cape Health MEC Ntandokazi Capa, who will formally introduce a cohort of highly skilled health professionals appointed through the National Tertiary Services Grant.
The appointments are aimed at improving access to specialised medical care and reinforcing Frere Hospital’s role as a key tertiary referral facility in the province.
According to the department, the newly appointed specialists include a Senior Manager: Medical Services, Heads of Department for Anaesthesia and Oncology, as well as specialists in Neurosurgery, Paediatrics (two appointments), Anaesthesia, Surgery, Urology, and Internal Medicine. In addition, the hospital will benefit from the appointment of High Care Unit (HCU) specialists in Urology and Internal Medicine.
“These appointments represent a significant investment in strengthening specialised and tertiary health services in the Eastern Cape,” the department said in a statement.
The presence of additional specialists is expected to ease pressure on existing staff, improve patient outcomes, and reduce waiting times for critical procedures and consultations.
The department also confirmed that six Medical Officers appointed through Section 16 Ministerial Funding will be formally welcomed during the event.
These appointments are intended to reinforce frontline clinical capacity at Frere Hospital, ensuring that patients receive timely and effective care across various departments.
Frere Hospital serves a wide catchment area across the eastern part of the province and plays a critical role in managing complex medical cases referred from surrounding district hospitals.
The addition of senior specialists and medical officers is expected to enhance the hospital’s ability to deliver comprehensive services, particularly in high-demand disciplines such as surgery, anaesthesia, paediatrics, and internal medicine.
The welcoming event will take place on Monday, 2 February 2026, at 09:00, at the Frere Hospital Human Resource Centre in East London.
Senior health officials, hospital management, and clinical staff are expected to attend.
The Eastern Cape Department of Health said it remains committed to strengthening the public health system through targeted recruitment, retention of skilled professionals, and continued investment in tertiary healthcare services to meet the growing needs of communities across the province.
