Operation Shanela II nets 25 undocumented migrants, 17 drunk drivers in East London
A large-scale, multi-agency police operation in KuGompo City (East London) has resulted in dozens of arrests, including undocumented foreign nationals and motorists driving under the influence.
According to the South African Police Service (SAPS), Operation Shanela II was conducted overnight from 21:00 on 17 April 2026 until 03:00 on 18 April 2026 across the Buffalo City Metro (BCM) District.
Multi-agency operation targets crime hotspots
The operation was led by Eastern Cape Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Vuyisile Ncata, with Buffalo City District Commissioner Major General Christopher Wright serving as operational commander.
Law enforcement teams included SAPS members, Provincial Traffic officers, the Department of Home Affairs, and the Eastern Cape Liquor Board. The MEC for Community Safety, Xolile Nqatha, was also present during the operation.
Authorities focused on several identified hotspots, including Duncan Village and parts of East London. Eight liquor outlets were inspected, with compliance checks conducted. No compliance notices were issued during these inspections.
Dozens arrested during overnight blitz
During the operation:
- 25 undocumented foreign nationals were arrested following verification by Home Affairs officials
- 17 motorists were arrested for drunken driving in KuGompo
- One suspect was arrested for possession of ammunition
- One suspect was arrested for possession of drugs
- One individual was charged with failing to safeguard a firearm
- In Kidds Beach, one additional arrest was made for possession of drugs
Police also reported the recovery of drugs, ammunition, and an undisclosed amount of cash.
Extensive stop-and-search operations
The coordinated operation included:
- 180 individuals searched
- 70 vehicles stopped at a roadblock
- Patrols conducted at:
- Three shopping malls
- Nineteen ATMs
- Four taxi ranks
- Two railway stations
- Two retail centres
- Eight filling stations
- Eight key points
Two premises suspected of drug-related activity were also searched.
Strong message against crime
Lieutenant General Ncata said the success of Operation Shanela II demonstrates ongoing efforts to clamp down on crime in the province.
He highlighted the importance of integrated operations, particularly immigration enforcement, and warned that individuals involved in illegal activities, including drunk driving and possession of prohibited items, will face arrest.
MEC Xolile Nqatha also commended law enforcement officials for their visible policing and coordination, stating that such operations send a clear message that crime will not be tolerated.
Court appearances expected
All arrested suspects are expected to appear in the East London Magistrate’s Court.
