Two arrested with nearly 9kg of dagga in Mbhashe bust

Two men aged 22 and 32 have been arrested in the Mbhashe Local Municipality after law enforcement officers found them in possession of large quantities of dagga and cash during an operation in Dutywa.

According to a statement issued by the municipality, the arrests were made on Wednesday by Mbhashe Local Municipality Law Enforcement Officers. The suspects were found with dagga weighing a combined total of 9,415kg, as well as cash amounting to R240 and 70 emalangeni (Eswatini currency).

Municipal officials said the initial discovery included two bags of dagga weighing 6,690kg and 2,725kg respectively.

Additional dagga found at residence

Following the arrest, officers conducted further investigations which led them to the suspects’ residence in Govern Mbeki township. There, additional small black plastic bags containing dagga were allegedly discovered.

Authorities confirmed that both suspects are holders of Eswatini passports.

They are currently being held in custody at Dutywa Police Station, where they are expected to face charges related to possession of drugs.

Municipality backs law enforcement efforts

In its statement, Mbhashe Local Municipality said the arrests form part of ongoing efforts to improve safety and combat crime in the area.

“The municipality remains committed to supporting law enforcement efforts in ensuring safer communities,” the statement read.

No further details were immediately available regarding the suspects’ expected court appearance.
