Kudu warning after crash on N6 near Komani

Motorists travelling on the N6 between Komani (Queenstown) and Jamestown are being urged to remain alert during early morning hours after a vehicle collided with a kudu on the route.

The incident occurred approximately 30km outside Komani and involved a single vehicle. Emergency Medical Services (EMS) were requested to respond to the scene to assess two occupants, a male and a female. No official confirmation on the extent of injuries has been released.

Wildlife collisions a known risk on N6

This section of the N6 passes through open rural areas where wildlife movement is common. Kudu, in particular, are frequently seen crossing roads in the Eastern Cape and are considered one of the more dangerous animals for motorists due to their size and speed.

Unlike smaller animals, kudu can enter the roadway suddenly and at high speed, giving drivers little time to react. Their height also increases the risk of severe impact damage during collisions.

Low-light conditions increase danger

Incidents involving wildlife are more likely to occur during:

• Early morning hours before sunrise
• Late evening and night-time
• Periods of reduced visibility

These are times when animals are more active and visibility for drivers is limited.

Motorists urged to take precaution

Drivers using the N6 and similar rural routes are advised to reduce speed in high-risk areas and remain alert to movement along the roadside, particularly in areas with open veld and minimal fencing.

No road closure has been reported following the incident, but the crash serves as a reminder of the risks posed by wildlife on major routes in the region.
