Are You Happy With the Current Water Supply in Your Area?

Komani, Eastern Cape — Many communities in and around Komani continue to face persistent water supply challenges, sparking frustration among residents and renewed debate about the reliability and equity of municipal water services.

For several years, parts of Komani have experienced frequent and prolonged disruptions in water supply. In 2025, high‑lying areas reported taps running dry for months at a time, forcing households to rely on irregular water‑truck deliveries that often arrived inconsistently. High demand and infrastructure limitations have contributed to ongoing shortages.

Widening Impact Beyond Town

While long‑standing problems in areas such as Ezibeleni, Victoria Park and Mlungisi are well documented, residents in Tylden — a village just outside Komani — have faced severe water shortages for more than three months, with many parts of the community “bone‑dry” and little reliable water access.

Beyond Tylden, villages surrounding Komani are also struggling with inadequate water supply. These communities have reported dry taps and limited access to potable water, adding to daily hardships for families who must walk farther distances or spend money on alternative sources.

In the township of Nomzano in Komani, residents too have raised concerns about reduced water pressure, interruptions linked to planned and unplanned outages, and the need to ration stored water amid inconsistent supply. Recent municipal notices have warned of low water pressure affecting parts of the town, especially when combined with electricity outages that limit the operation of water treatment and pumping facilities.

Persistent Systemic Issues

Experts and observers say the broader crisis stems from a combination of outdated infrastructure, delays in major water projects, and rising demand outpacing supply capacity.

Last year, almost half of Komani’s wards were affected by water outages linked to low dam levels and distribution challenges, prompting emergency measures such as rationing and water‑carting.

Health and Daily Life Strain

Beyond inconvenience, limited access to reliable water has affected daily life and public health. Past reports found families waiting for tanker deliveries, queuing for water at central points, or going days without sufficient water for basic needs.

For some residents, delays in infrastructure upgrades and ongoing interruptions have undermined confidence in municipal water planning — especially in areas beyond Komani’s central zones.
