KOMANI / LADY FRERE, Eastern Cape – An upcoming Xhosa hip-hop artist from Lady Frere is appealing for wider community support as he continues to pursue his music career, saying that while some support exists, opportunities remain limited for local talent.

Basenathi Siyaphila is from Vaalbank in Lady Frere and has been involved in music since his school years. He says he started making music in 2016 while in Grade 6, and has continued consistently up to the present.

Years of Consistency, Few Breakthroughs

Despite being active in music for several years, Basenathi says little has changed in terms of exposure and opportunities. He describes the experience of many upcoming artists in Komani as one where talent exists, but platforms are scarce.

He explained in a message to Komani News that upcoming artists in Komani need support and that sharing their work helps people see the talent that is already there.

Music Style and Vision

Basenathi focuses on Xhosa hip hop, drawing inspiration from artists in the genre while aiming to develop his own identity. His stated goal is to build a lasting legacy in Queenstown (Komani) and become an example of what a local artist from the area can achieve.

He has indicated that he is willing to perform at farewells, parties, and clubs, as part of gaining experience and growing his presence in the local music scene.

Support From Ikhala College Community

While Basenathi is not a student at Ikhala TVET College, he says that students from Ikhala College support him and that he has been invited to perform at times through those connections. He views this support as encouraging, but says more opportunities are needed beyond limited platforms.

Call for Exposure and Bookings

Basenathi has asked the community, event organisers, and promoters to help by sharing his music and considering him for bookings, noting that visibility plays a key role in helping local artists progress.
