The smash-up, which has left the Eastern Cape reeling, happened when a VW Polo, carrying two adults – a man and a woman – suddenly lost control on the wet and slippery road surface. Sources say the car spun and crashed straight into two other vehicles coming the opposite way: a bakkie and a Mercedes-Benz sedan.

  • Heartbreak at the Scene: Emergency services confirmed the little baby died right there at the accident site.

  • Four Others HURT: Four other people involved in the carnage sustained minor injuries and were treated by paramedics.

🚨 Mzansi Roads are DANGEROUS! 🚨

This devastating crash was the worst recorded on Eastern Cape roads yesterday, although there were several other minor accidents as the holiday traffic volumes begin to swell.

With Christmas just around the corner and many workers heading home to their families, the roads are becoming a dangerous mess.

The Eastern Cape Department of Transport is warning all drivers: BE CAREFUL! They are urging motorists to show “heightened vigilance and extreme caution” as more holidaymakers and home-bound residents hit the N2 and other busy routes.

“The MEC for Transport in the Eastern Cape extends his heartfelt condolences to the family of the infant during this painful and difficult time,” said a departmental spokesperson.

TAKE CARE!

Motorists are reminded of the basic, but lifesaving, rules:

  • Adjust your driving to the prevailing weather conditions.

  • Reduce your speed—especially when the road is wet!

  • Ensure the safety of all passengers, particularly the little ones!

DON’T LET YOUR CHRISTMAS TRIP TURN INTO A NIGHTMARE! DRIVE SLOW, ARRIVE ALIVE!
